Gartner said the first quarter numbers also showed that there was a clear move towards low-end servers. Among the top vendors, IBM continued to hold the lead in server hardware revenue, occupying a 30.7 percent share of the market. However, in unit shipments, HP finished ahead of IBM with a 28.5 percent share of the market, with Dell coming in third.
Gartner's data showed that Dell is the fastest-growing of the leading server vendors, increasing unit sales by 38.4 percent and revenue by 24.8 percent over the period. Sun Microsystems was clearly affected by the shift from high- to low-end servers. According to Gartner, its unit shipments were up 26.5 percent, but revenue fell 12.5 percent
